The Importance of Good Indoor Air Quality

July 13, 2020

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that poor indoor air quality (IAQ) is detrimental to our respiratory health. However, indoor air quality is an environmental health concern that tends to be overlooked compared to other environmental concerns. IAQ refers to the air quality in a building or home and how it relates to the comfort and health of its occupants. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution as one of the top five environmental risks to our health.

Indoor air pollutants cause immediate health effects like nose, eye and throat irritation, headaches, fatigue, and aggravated asthma symptoms. Additionally, long-term effects can include respiratory diseases and cancer. What exactly are these indoor pollutants? Lead, mold, mites, carbon monoxide, smoke, asbestos, radon, volatile organic compounds, pesticides, and biological pollutants.

Who’s at Risk?

Since we spend up to 90% of our time indoors, almost anyone can be at risk for poor indoor air quality. People who have preexisting health conditions are more susceptible to indoor air pollution. Children also have a higher risk than adults because their bodies are still developing so it’s crucial we pay close attention to IAQ.

What you can do to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Eliminate or reduce sources of pollution: The most effective way to improve the quality of indoor air is to target the sources of pollution and either eliminate it or reduce its emissions. For example, asbestos can be enclosed or sealed, you can start a “no smoking in the house” rule, or regularly dust and clean your home to reduce allergens

Improve your property’s ventilation: Opening doors and windows whenever possible is a good way to bring outside air in. Ventilation is important especially when we’re doing an activity that generates pollutants such as painting a room, cooking, and even remodeling.

Maintain your HVAC system: A well-maintained HVAC system maintains comfortable temperatures and promotes healthy indoor air. By cleaning your vents, getting regular maintenance, and getting air cleaners you’re contributing to proper indoor air quality.
